First black type for Arrowfield 2YOs

Hard on the heels of an Arrowfield graduate treble in Hong Kong, came a trio of Arrowfield-sold 2YOs to fill three of the available six placings in the season’s first Australian juvenile stakes races, held at Randwick on Saturday.

The ATC Breeders’ Plate 1000m LR provided a notable result for agent James Harron & trainers Peter & Paul Snowden who bought the impressive winner Capitalist and the runner-up Detective at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale.

Snitzel’s son Detective, bred by the Arrowfield, John Leaver & Alan Jones partnership, was a $220,000 purchase from Arrowfield’s draft.

Detective is out of Western Australian Group 1 winner Covertly (by Metal Storm), also dam of Bourne Supremacy (by Redoute’s Choice), a two-time city winner from the Perth stable of Chris Gangemi.

Covertly has a yearling full brother to Detective & a Snitzel colt born last month, and visits four-time Group 1-winning sprinter-miler Olympic Glory.

In the ATC Gimcrack S. 1000m LR for 2YO fillies Arrowfield supplied Jeanneau and Slumber Party, who filled the placings behind the Darley home-bred Calliope.

Jeanneau (Beneteau-North Sea by Hussonet) was bought by her trainer Paul Perry from the Inglis Classic (Summer) Sale for $170,000, Arrowfield’s top price and the second-highest price paid for a filly at that sale.

North Sea, from the family of champion sire Storm Bird, also has an unraced 3YO daughter American At Sea (by All American) and a yearling colt by Smart Missile.

Jeanneau is the sixth stakes performer from 40 runners for Arrowfield’s gifted home-bred colt Beneteau, who sired two crops before his death in January 2013.

Slumber Party (Snitzel-Hokuspokus by Red Ransom) gave trainer Gai Waterhouse, US owner Jon Kelly and New South Wales-based Paul Frampton an early black type return on the $620,000 they paid for her at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale where she was Arrowfield’s second top-priced filly.

Hokuspokus, a city-winning half-sister to juvenile stakeswinners Come Hither & Fun In Flight from the Easy Date family, has a yearling colt by Animal Kingdom, and in August produced a colt to Dundeel.

Detective & Slumber Party take Snitzel’s tally of 2YO stakes performers to 42 – more than 13% of all his juvenile runners.
