Let’s Elope goes to Mamma

“Hopefully, she’s Not A Single Doubt’s next Group 1 winner!” That was the message from part-owner Peter Katelanis after  Don’t Doubt Mamma won Saturday’s $200,000 VRC Let’s Elope S. 1400m G2.

There’s every reason to be confident in the 4YO mare’s ability to step another level. She has progressed steadily over the past 18 months from a single juvenile success in Adelaide to Listed and Group 3 victories in Melbourne and now to a brilliant Group 2 win in competitive distaff company.

Dwayne Dunn allowed Don’t Doubt Mamma to drift back towards mid-field from the ace draw, but the space she needed in the straight was a long time coming. It was only 100 metres from the post that the little mare with the big white blaze burst through on the rail to nab victory from Thames Court and Manageress.

Trainer Tony McEvoy said, “Dwayne didn’t have many other options and he showed great patience. She’s not very big and had 58 kilos on her back but he didn’t panic and trusted her. She’s a real pro that loves winning.”

The Let’s Elope Stakes has previously been won by subsequent Group 1 winners including Mannerism (1992), Rewaaya (2006), Devil Moon (2007) and Pinker Pinker (2011). A possible Group 1 target for Don’t Doubt Mamma is the $500,000 Toorak H. G1 at Caulfield on 8 October.

The daughter of Coconut Mamma (by Fantastic Light from the celebrated Denise’s Joy family) was bred by Dean Fleming and purchased privately as a yearling by Blue Sky Bloodstock for Katelanis, his son Jordan, Peter Hunt, Andrew Lathlean, Darren Thomas & Seymour Bloodstock.

Unfortunately, Coconut Mamma was retired from breeding after delivering Don’t Doubt Mamma, whose older brother Risen From Doubt is a stakeswinner for the same owners and trainer.

Coconut Mamma’s only other Australian-based daughter, Miss St Tropez (by Magnus) was purchased in 2011 by Blue Sky for Arrowfield, which also owned Denise’s Joy for the latter part of her breeding life. Miss St Tropez has a yearling filly by All American and visits Not A Single Doubt this Spring.

Don’t Doubt Mamma is one of 34 lifetime stakeswinners for Not A Single Doubt who also gained a new Group performer on Saturday, when Southern Legend finished third in the ATC Theo Marks S. G2.
