Overview

G1 WINNER BY DANEHILL & CHAMPION AUSTRALIAN SIRE 2007
BOOK FULL

The demand for FLYING SPUR is stronger than ever in 2010, at the end of a season in which he has posted his 75th stakeswinner, and his 12th Group One winner, ALVERTA (STC Coolmore Stud S. G1). Her subsequent storming run for third in the stellar company of the Newmarket July Cup G1 epitomised the class, pace and courage her sire so regularly transmits.

The six-year-old mare is one of ten stakeswinners by FLYING SPUR in 2009/10, alongside G2 MENTALITY, G3 winners MONTANA FLYER, INSPIRATION and FLYING TRISTRAM, Listed Stakes winners FLYING PRINCESS, GEORGETTE SILK, MOTSPUR, ROULETTES & WIND SHEAR.

A feature of FLYING SPUR's 2009/10 record is that his ten stakeswinners are distributed across six crops, from impressive juveniles ROULETTES & GEORGETTE SILK to seven-year-old MOTSPUR, winner of four races, including the BRC Falvelon H. LR and $255,450 this season.

Flying Spur himself was a brilliant juvenile, his 3 wins including the Group 1 Golden Slipper and the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude. He went on to be an outstanding 3YO and Weight For Age Star as well and retired the winner of three Group 1 races from 1200m-1600m.

Flying Spur is bred in the richest purple, being by sire of sires Danehill (USA) out of a half-sister (by Mr. Prospector) to the dam of Champion Sire Encosta de Lago.

At stud, Flying Spur has continued to excel. In 2007 - the year he was crowned Australian Champion Sire and Australian Champion 2YO Sire- he was famously responsible for the G1 Golden Slipper/Blue Diamond double: FORENSICS [the only Slipper winner of modern times to also win Groups 1‘s at 3 & 4 years] and SLEEK CHASSIS. NZ Champion 2YO Sire in 2001, in 2005 he was also Australian Champion Sire by Winners with his 127 individual winners being 16 more than his nearest rival.

Overall, Flying Spur is the sire of 7 millionaires, 12 individual G1 winners, 75 stakeswinners and 54 stakesplaced horses with lifetime earnings of more than $84 million. He is the sire of separate winners of the major Australasian 2YO races - the Golden Slipper (FORENSICS), Blue Diamond (SLEEK CHASSIS), AJC Champagne Stakes (MENTALITY), QTC T. J.Smith (JUANMO), Silver Slipper (FRENCH BRAIDS & SHAFT), Manawatu Sires' Produce (SAN LUIS), Matamata Breeders' Stakes (FLYING BABE), STC Skyline Stakes (KRUPT & CASINO PRINCE). In fact, he is the sire in Australasia of 11 Group winning 2YOs - five at G1 level.

In the Ring

Flying Spur yearlings have sold to $1 m in recent years.

Future sellers of Flying Spur progeny are expected to reap the benefits of matings of the 2006 to 2008 seasons. Flying Spur saw a dramatic increase in his service fee in 2007 and then 2008 following the exemplary race performance of his progeny across these 2 seasons and the stallion himself being crowned Champion Australia Sire in 2007. Flying Spur’s excellent book of mares in 2006 (157 now 2YO’s – and include GEORGETTE SILK, ROULETTES etc) and 2007 (131 now yearlings) managed to be eclipsed by the quality of his 2008 book (110 foals) which include the progeny of the Group winners REPUBLIC LASS, PRISONER OF LOVE, ONLY WORDS, IKE'S DREAM, I GOT CHILLS, GOLD LOTTEY, FOXWOOD, ELEVENSES etc.

Flying Spur matings of 2009 and 2010 will sell when the above superbly bred crops are 2, 3 and 4YO’s which certainly bodes well for vendors who will also be taking advantage of the impact of the GFC on service fees.
