Starcraft (NZ)

2010 Fee: $38,500 inc GST

Overview

A CHAMPION IN BOTH HEMISPHERES. SIRE OF G1 WINNER STAR WITNESS
$38,500

To be awarded the tile ‘champion’ in one Hemisphere is difficult enough; to secure the title in both hemisphere requires a rare type of horse.

Starcraft - the winner of 5 Group One races in four countries, 2004 Champion 3YO of Australia, and 2005 World Champion Older Turf Miler – is a rare horse indeed.

From the family of Champions BALMERINO and SURROUND, and by a proven sireline in Australasia, Starcraft covered large, quality books in his first seasons at stud.

It was always anticipated that Starcraft’s progeny would excel more in their Classic year rather than at two. Disproving the theory, the stallion’s first Northern Hemisphere starter – DON’T TELL MARY – was a stakeswinner. Starcraft's status as a topline stallion in the making was confirmed by the appearance of his first Australian runners.

With two metropolitan placegetters from his first two starters, Starcraft then unveiled a G1 winner with just his fourth runner, STAR WITNESS, who graduated from a scintillating win in the VRC Talindert Stakes LR to score a dominant victory in the MRC Blue Diamond Stakes G1. Less than a week later MR SPOCK gained black type in the Waikato Stud Slipper LR in New Zealand.

Starcraft has since added four more impressive winners to his Southern Hemisphere record: Ain'tnofallenstar & Starstreamed (Australia), and Starcheeka & the filly We Can Say It Now (New Zealand) who went on to run a very game second in the ARC Great Northern Foal S. LR in May.

Meanwhile, three-year-old colt Keep Cool has been twice Group 3-placed in Germany, and Soul Station has won at two and three in England.

In the Ring

Starcraft retired to stud in 2005. His first yearlings were offered in 2009 and averaged $104,903 for the 52 sold with a top price of $450,000.

With the early precocity of his stock, and with trainers keen to acquire Starcraft yearlings due to their temperament and ability, Starcraft proved even more popular in 2010. The 12 yearlings offered at the Magic Millions Premier averaged $120,000 and sold to $340,000. The results from Karaka Premier were exceptional – 7 yearlings averaging $201,429 and selling to $360,000. Starcraft went on to provide the 4th highest price at the Inglis Classic - the colt out of Unusual Choice bringing $130,000 - whilst at the Melbourne Premier yearlings averaged $114,667 and sold to $300,000.
